DETROIT REPATCHED IS A 2021 KNIGHT ARTS CHALLENGE DETROIT WINNING PROJECT!
Artists and creatives are at the heart of Detroit rePatched. We invite these amazing individuals to develop personal, collaborative, and community-based works that support Detroit rePatched. From 2022-2023, we are privileged to work with the following creatives (L to R): Sabrina Nelson, Patrick Barber (former member), Yvette Rock, M. Saffell Gardner, Lisa Rivera, Michael Reid (not pictured), Mark Schumack, and Stanley Larry. We will also invite other local creatives, builders, consultants, collaborators, etc. to help us activate and build out Detroit rePatched.
Navjeet Kaur (b. 1993, Detroit, MI). is an interdisciplinary artist based in Detroit, MI. Kaur’s practice explores the harmony and chaos which exists within the body, spirit, and the earth. Her body sculptures take form as the earthly elements embodied as ancestors whom she pieces together to create reimagined stories and places of belonging. Her recent body of work “We are Water Separated from its River '' was exhibited at Womxnhouse Detroit where she was selected as a fellow in 2022. In 2021, Kaur exhibited in a solo show titled “Blood Memories: of Sun, Soil, and Threaded Rivers” at Hatch Gallery in Hamtramck. Her work and writing has been featured in Riverwise Detroit magazine where she advocates for the rights of Sikh-Punjabi farmers to peacefully protest in India. Kaur works as an art teacher in the Detroit area and leads workshops with organizations that advocate for BIPOC communities. She received her BFA in Painting from Wayne State University and MA in Intercultural Communication from Oakland University.
For her residency at Detroit rePatched, Live Coal's arts-infused green space and art hub, Kaur will work on creating a new body of work as well as working with the surrounding community to conduct workshops and work collaboratively.
"My intended environmental and social impact of my project is to create a dialogue around how capitalist policies, man-made borders, and colonization have separated humans from their sacred connection to land and life around them. This disconnection has caused so much devastation and trauma to Mother Earth alone. The environmental impacts of this include the destruction of the spirit of the people, plants, and animals that have coexisted on that land for centuries before. We are all connected and need one another to live in harmony on this planet." - Navjeet Kaur
The Detroit rePatched Artist-in-Residence program is supported by Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan and the Wilson Arts Grant.
